Kathleen Holmes, PhD
About Dr. Holmes
I grew up in Williamsburg, VA, where I developed an interest in psychology at a relatively early age. I took my first college psychology course while I was in high school, which confirmed my fascination with the subject. I completed my undergraduate studies at James Madison University, where my honors thesis focused on the relationship between dissociation and body image concerns. After graduation, I continued with enthusiasm down the psychology research path as a post-baccalaureate research fellow in the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at the National Institute of Mental Health.

I began my graduate training in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, in a program with a strong research emphasis. My first experience providing therapy was in a cognitive therapy practicum within that program. I was introduced to the work that would become my passion, just as I was feeling unsure about pursuing a full-time research career. After taking some time off to consider my next steps, I returned to graduate school at St. John’s University in Queens, NY. Their clinical psychology PhD program allowed me focus more on the clinical practice of psychology while continuing to be involved in some research.
While studying at St. John's University, I gained experience in a variety of clinical settings across the New York City metro area, including a community mental health clinic, a college counseling center, a residential substance abuse treatment program, and an inpatient psychiatric unit. I developed a solid foundation in evidence-based psychotherapy and culturally sensitive care. I completed my internship and postdoctoral fellowship in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, where I then worked as a staff psychologist for several years prior to relocating to the research triangle area and shifting to private practice.
At the core of my professional identity is a longstanding curiosity about people, emotions, and behavior—an interest that began early in life and continues to guide my work today. While I ultimately decided to focus on clinical practice, I appreciate my research background, and I continue to be an active consumer of scientific literature. Psychotherapy allows me to continually engage in learning while working collaboratively with clients to apply evidence-based approaches in ways that are individualized, practical, and responsive to their needs.
